Imagine that you are offered the chance to become a vampire. Not the sinister, fictional kind, but a different version of yourself, stronger, wiser, yet fundamentally changed. Would you take the leap? The catch is, that you cannot know what it is like to be a vampire until you become one. How do you decide?
This dilemma, known as “the vampire problem,” is at the heart of philosopher L.A. Paul's exploration of transformative experiences. It raises a profound question: how can we make life-changing decisions when we cannot fully predict who we will become on the other side?
The truth is you cannot simply research your way into understanding a transformation. Let us say you ask vampires how they feel about their lives now, they might tell you it is incredible, or that their perspectives have shifted completely. But as a human, can you really grasp what that means? Not fully. You can imagine it, sure, but your current human self is making that guess. The experience of being a vampire is so radically different from your current reality that you cannot know it without becoming it.
This paradox does not just apply to wild, hypothetical scenarios. Think about becoming a parent, moving to a new country, changing careers, or starting a deep personal journey. Each of these decisions carries the same question: how can you decide when you cannot fully know the outcome? How do you choose to become someone you cannot yet understand?
Here is where the risk comes in. Making transformative decisions means stepping into the unknown and embracing a future self you cannot fully predict. It is risky, of course. Change always is. You are leaving behind the safety of the known, even if the known feels stagnant or unsatisfying. And yet, most of life’s richest experiences come from this very risk. Transformation, by its nature, requires us to surrender some control and trust the process.
The vampire dilemma, then, is a metaphor for every significant leap in life. You will never have all the answers beforehand. No amount of planning can give you certainty over what you will feel or how you’ll change once you take that step. But that does not mean you should avoid it.
The paradox of transformation teaches us that while we cannot fully anticipate who we’ll become, we have to trust that growth is part of the journey. Taking the leap, even without knowing the landing, is part of embracing life in all its messy, unpredictable, and beautiful uncertainty.
Is it risky? Absolutely. But without risk, there is no transformation. The only way to know what is on the other side is by stepping forward.
At The Holding Space, we embrace this journey, by creating a nurturing environment for women who are navigating change, by supporting and encouraging growth amidst the uncertainty.
